Practice Makes Perfect: Tips to Create a Functional Guitar Practice Space

Whether you are the next Eric Clapton in the making or just an Average Joe busking on the street corner, you need to practice in order to be really good at playing guitar. You might be of the opinion that you can practice anywhere, and technically you can, but having a dedicated space in which to fine-tune your strumming will take your guitar practice to the next level.

You don’t need to rent space in a sought-after neighborhood to have a haven to practice your guitaring in nor do you need an area with all the functionalities of a recording studio. All you need is a bit of available room and some creative ingenuity.

Here are some guidelines to help you create a pitch-perfect practice space:

Declutter

A clean, practical space is what you are looking for. Keep the furnishings minimalistic – you don’t need a whole lot of space-fillers to distract you from your music.  Get rid of everything you don’t need or haven’t used in a while – if it’s not needed, chuck it!

Get Comfortable

There is nothing worse than being forced to sit on an uncomfortable chair while playing guitar. Back support is key so choose a seat that is both comforatable and practical.

Tempt Yourself

The ideal guitar practice space must make you WANT to play guitar, you need to feel inspired. Put up posters of your favorite guitar players or even better, frame the chords and tabs to your favorite songs.  Organize your music sheets in an attractive manner on a nice stand and add a few CDs to the display as well. If your dream is to one day record in a music studio, entice yourself into becoming that good!

Remember the Basics

There are a number of tools no avid guitar player should ever be without.  No one knows your quirks better than you so make sure you equip yourself with a full range of musical accessories, from metronomes to recording devices, that will enhance your personal practice sessions. Don’t feel disheartened if you can’t kit out a state-of-the-art practice room straight away. Start with the basics and build on it – it could turn out to be a fulfilling long-term project to work on.

There is no such thing as the perfect blueprint for an ideal practice space. The area can be as big or as small as you want it, furnished and decorated to your personal taste. It can take on the feel of a mastering studio or a casual music-cave. The only prerequisites are that it must depict who YOU want to be as an artist and that you will feel like the rockstar you were born to be while playing in it.
